Bits and pieces

So many people asked me for a photo of the new bag that I have taken one.  I suspect you might notice that the background is the corner of a wine rack.

I thought I would also share with you a tiny vase of snowdrops and hellebore which is currently sitting on my kitchen table.  The little vase was bought for me by younger son on his first visit to France when he was about twelve.  I loved it when he gave it to me and I have loved it ever since.
The next blog is going to be a review of the new book by Toby Buckland, presenter of the BBC's Gardeners' World programme.  That sounds like a trailer for something which isn't what I meant!  What I mean is that I thought I might write it tonight and find I haven't quite finished thinking about it.  It is quite exciting to be asked to review something and even more exciting to get a free gardening book, since gardening books of the paid variety come trooping through the door here all year long.  Having established that I can say what I like about the book without fear or favour I thought it would be interesting to do it and have been carting the book about with me and reading it with rather more attention than I would have done had I not had the task of working out what I actually think.  I've always been a bit wary of the role of the critic.  It is so much easier to write about someone else's endeavour than to do it yourself and so easy to let the power of the pen go to your head.  I am uncomfortable when I read a really savage review of anything, even something that might deserve it.  If you want to read a review written with a wonderfully light and sardonic touch try this one by Julian Clary of a novel by Sharon Osbourne.  Mine will not be like that, sadly, but it made me smile!

I will just go away and finish getting my head round what I like and don't like about the Toby Buckland book and have a go tomorrow, possibly after yoga when the whole world looks a little shinier.

  5. Sorry Elizabeth - the last post was mine but annoyed by a spelling error. Your vase is just the perfect colour for your 'drops.

  6. you are right; I couldn't get in via the blog itself but the homepage has worked.

I never thought of putting a few snowdrops into a tiny vase, how dense of me; will do so in the morning.

Clever you, becoming a book reviewer; is this for a paper?

  7. There is no link to post a comment from the post page, if that helps you figure out what might be wrong.
I like your snow drops; I have some, but they are much smaller than yours. I posted a picture of mine yesterday. Yours look lovely with the hellebore!
    Blessings!

  9. Lucky you helibores already!!!, I called to mine this morning to tell them to get their skates on, they look lovely at this time of year with the low sun shining through their petals, but not a flower to be seen. As far as Julian Clary, hopefully your review won't need to be quite that racy.

  10. Elizabeth, the colour of your bag is delicious!! I think that sort of thing really perks one up - my latest bag is purple, and it's amazing how much better put together it makes me feel. if this makes me sounds like a bag fanatic and a fashionista, neither is true. But it's fun to have something different!
Good luck with writing your review. Who asked you to do it? Did I miss something in your post?

  11. A-ha! I was wondering hwy I couldn't post a comment yesterday, I went away and came back via another route and bingo it worked. Same happened today, I visit via the link on my blog, and no comments possible, then I have to click on your header to comment. How very odd.

Lovely bag, by the way, and lovely snowdrops.

  12. 'I need to carry wine around with me. I'm going to GET this wine rack (pant, pant) INto this bag if it (pant, pant) KILLS me (pant pant, shove shove). Nope. It won't go in. Will just have to leave it here by the bag and carry it separately.'
